LASG COMMITTED TO TRAINING OF SOCIAL WORKERS

The Commissioner of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development Mrs. Akinbile-Yusuf has reiterated the commitment of the state government to training and retraining of social welfare officers to meet with the demand of the changing trends in their profession.

She disclosed this on Tuesday at the opening ceremony of a two day workshop organized by the Ministry in collaboration with the British High commissioner on Inter-country, at... the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Secretariat.

The commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Hakeem Muri Okunola said the workshop could not have come at a better time, given the need to hone the skills of social workers in the State in order to provide useful and necessary service to the vulnerable group in the society. This would enhance social welfare delivery in the State.

“There is need for our social workers to have cross-fertilization of ideas on social welfare practice of other countries particularly the United Kingdom giving the social and economic ties Nigeria shares with Britain. It is therefore my utmost pleasure that Lagos State social welfare officers and other participants will benefit maximally from this training programme. This will ultimately expose officers to new trends in social work practice’’. The Commissioner stated.

She emphasized that the workshop will equip participants with skills required for proper assessment and flawless report writing which are the foundation of social work practice. He equally added that, the workshop will expose the participants to new ways social work is practiced both in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Akinbile-Yusuf urged the participants to make the best use of the opportunity by concentrating, contributing and asking questions in the course of the workshop. These discussions will enrich all participants’ knowledge and understanding of social work practice.
The British High Commission was appreciated for collaborating with the State Government in organizing this workshop to boost the capacity of Social Workers which in turn will contribute immensely to social work delivery in the State.
