Lagos schools resume on Monday, April 11

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Education, has confirmed Monday, April 11, 2016 as the resumption date for the Third Term academic session in public schools in the State.

In a statement released today by the Ministry, Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, emphasised that it became necessary to clarify the resumption date based on recent rumour and insinuations that the resumption date has been postponed.

Mrs. Adebule, who supervises the activities of the Ministry, said the state government   recognizes the pressure associated with the current fuel scarcity and its attendant consequences, but maintained that higher premium must be placed on the development of school children who are the leaders of tomorrow.

While appealing to parents and guardians to look beyond the present situation and encourage their wards to face their studies with renewed vigour, she noted that the call for a shift in the resumption date will only distort the academic calendar for the year.

The Deputy Governor therefore urged proprietors of Private Schools, Head Teachers/ Principals of public schools to do everything humanly possible to see that the school calendar runs uninterrupted in the State

Proper Funding of Medical Education Will Help Health Tourism- Arogudande

:
The President of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Prof. Rasheed Arogundade has advised President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to accord funding priority to the medical colleges across the nation.
This he argued would address the challenge of frequent visits to foreign nations for medical attention by wealthy Nigerians.
The Professor of Radiology, who gave the advice while delivering his inaugural lecture at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, said the focus of government has always been on the hospitals while neglecting the institutions that produce the human resources for the health sector.
Arogundade, who expressed his fulfilment for reaching the peak of his career, also revealed that many medical graduates from Nigeria are usually challenged abroad when confronted with modern facilities, which he said are unavailable for their training in their home country.
The lecturer, whose lecture was entitled; 'The Detective in a Radiologist,' linked the dearth of facilities to the raging problem of wrong diagnosis being faced in the country's health sector, adding that Nigerians are as brilliant as their counterparts anywhere in the world but are hindered by the poor equipment available.
He said; "Well, the solution to the myriad of challenges facing us as a nation should be that government should pump a lot of money into education and medical education in particular.
They currently don't allocate enough funding to the education sector and that is why the equipment we are supposed to be using to teach are not there. Most of our students who go abroad are usually as if they are starting afresh because they were more concerned with theories here without adequate practical experience. "

JAMB candidates protesting at UNILAG

University of Lagos has rejected about 59,000 candidates who applied for admission into the school through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

This was irrespective of the fact that majority of the students scored above the Board’s cut-off mark.

Speaking in an interview with Vanguard, JAMB spokesman, Mr Fabian Benjamin stated that the Board has entered into an agreement with the school to post the rejected students to other schools in Lagos environs.

Although, some protesting candidate claimed they are not aware of the JAMB posting, the exam body said candidates should check its website on Friday, August 5, 2015 to see the postings.

According to him, “Admission is not the way people think. We have Merit, Catchment and closeness to a state. Those are the criteria we are following to arrive at that list we sent to Unilag. It’s not about the cut off point, there are other considerations.”

“UNILAG has only 9000 capacity this years and that is why we are trying to push the others to other universities.”
And they will not understand we are trying to send them to schools that will admit them because Unilag can only take 9,000 but the students are not being patient with us to get this information across to them.”

“We sympathise with them but we wish to state categorically that the national cut off point is just the minimum expectation that each candidate desirous of university admission should have.

“However, universities are at liberty to go higher than 180, depending on their peculiarities and the performance of candidates who chose them”

“For instance, if over 10,000 candidates who made Unilag their first choice scored 250 and above, it will be difficult for them to go lower than 250 when they are to admit only about 9,000. “I wish to state that a time will come when some universities will go up to 300 as their cut off mark, depending on the performance,” the statement said.

It explained that because of the development, the board decided that some of the candidates who chose such institutions but fall below their cut off marks should not miss out, hence the need to send them to other schools.
